Data Analyst, Energy job description

DNV – Energy Systems’ Analytics and Digitalization group is seeking an Energy Data Analyst to join our team. This role will involve strategic problem solving by synthesizing your skills in data management, analytics, data visualization, and awareness of industry-relevant topics, to develop on-point analyses, reports, and presentations.

What You’ll Do

Data Management and Analytics

  • Support design, development, testing, documentation, and ongoing support of Azure-based, reporting solutions, with a focus on the user, data security, performance and scalability. You will work with DNV’s Veracity.com industry data platform
  • Support implementation and maintenance of ETL processes and data quality control
  • Engage with technical and non-technical clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders to understand data challenges, define requirements, propose and deliver successful solutions
  • Build visualizations and dashboards to effectively communicate information for decision-makers
  • Perform a variety of quality control checks to ensure the accuracy of the data and analytic results
  • Interpret the results of data analyses to produce concise, meaningful conclusions and recommendations for client-facing reports and professional papers
  • Develop and maintain products that deliver data visualizations/reports to enable users to grasp concepts, identify patterns, and make better business decisions
    Project/Task Management
  • Support the activities of the Project Management Office (PMO), including implementation, governance, and documentation of PMO procedures
  • Support project plan development and manage tasks and/or projects (including client interactions)
  • Participating in our agile way of working, and possibly performing some agile project management tasks for smaller or larger projects.
  • Collaborate with local and international virtual teams, and project stakeholders in an agile environment across time zones
  • Meet financial objectives by forecasting workload; managing allocated task budgets; analyzing variances; and initiating corrective actions where necessary
  • Interview business stakeholders to identify focus of research and expected project outcome (scope, background, business case, etc.)
    Behavior and Communication
  • Communicate proactively and effectively with staff all levels to find information, learn new skills, troubleshoot problems, and address complex issues
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and clients
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional, cross-cultural, cross-location team
  • Contribute meaningfully to team efforts to achieve group and company goals while providing insight, enthusiasm, and support
  • Act as a role model for other staff through your leadership, mentorship, and sharing of knowledge and skills

What Is Required

  • A proven grasp of one or more programming or statistics software languages such as SQL, SAS, R, Python, JavaScript
  • Prior experience using MS Office – Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and aptitude for “connecting the dots” among different topics and/or sources of information
  • An organized, detail-oriented approach and the ability to work independently
  • Ability to take direction from multiple people and perform varied tasks
  • Most importantly, this individual should display a positive, team-oriented attitude to match our friendly work environment
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills
  • We conduct pre-employment drug and background screening

  • Bachelor’s degree in policy, economics, or an analytical discipline, such as engineering, mathematics, statistics, finance, or computer programming
  • Understanding of business intelligence and data warehouse relational data modelling concepts
  • Experience with the Microsoft Azure data platform and services like Azure SQL DB, Analysis Services, Databricks, Data factory, and Power BI.
  • Experience working in an agile environment and with agile tools like JIRA or Azure DevOps
  • Prior exposure to utilities or broader energy sector and experience in distributed energy resources (DERs), energy efficiency (EE), and electric vehicles (EVs) is highly preferred.
  • Located within reasonable commuting distance of the following DNV offices in the US: Portland, ME, New York, NY, Medford, MA, North Andover, MA, Arlington, VA, Madison, WI.
