Data Analyst job description

Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Community Engagement, the Data Analyst is responsible for managing data systems, analysis and reporting to advance the mission of preventing homelessness and achieving equitable outcomes. This role oversees data collection, integrity, analysis and continuous improvement to support program delivery, compliance and organizational effectiveness. A strategic and analytical thinker, the Data Analyst brings expertise in data-informed decision-making, system optimization and translating client and program data into actionable insights. The position plays a central role in partnering with program, finance and development teams, maintaining strong relationships with government agencies and external partners and ensuring high-quality reporting that supports funding, evaluation and community building efforts.

Responsibilities:

§ Promote a client-first, data-informed culture aligned with the organization’s mission to prevent homelessness and advance equitable outcomes and impact.

§ Lead the management, integrity and continuous improvement of internal databases and external data platforms including HMIS systems, Census analysis tools, Housing Vacancy Survey data and NYC OpenData, to support program delivery, compliance, reporting and staff efficiency.

§ Oversee data collection, analysis and reporting to ensure accurate and timely information for funders, leadership and program teams.

§ Interpret quantitative and qualitative data and create clear charts, graphics and data visualizations to communicate trends, outcomes and impact.

§ Translate program and client data into insights that support development, evaluation and data-driven community building efforts.

§ Serve as the organization’s data systems subject matter expert, advising leadership on risks, opportunities and best practices related to data use and system performance.

§ Collaborate with finance, development and program teams to support funding procurement, grant reporting and contractual deliverables.

§ Maintain strong relationships with government agencies, vendors and external partners related to data systems and reporting.

§ Develop documentation, training materials and workflows; train and support staff to ensure consistent and accurate data practices that reflect the realities of serving households in crisis.

§ Ensure excellent database management and analytics, maintain data integrity, meet all program contractual and reporting requirements and prepare weekly, quarterly and annual reports focused on prevention impact and outcomes.

§ Other duties as assigned.

Data Analyst job requirements

Skills and qualifications

§ Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree a plus;

§ Experience in data systems, analytics or information management;

§ Strong knowledge of data systems supporting housing, homelessness prevention, human services or related social impact fields, with a demonstrated commitment to equity and client-centered practice;

§ Demonstrated experience leading data strategy, system implementation and continuous improvement in complex, fast-paced environments;

§ Experience overseeing data collection, validation, compliance and reporting for government contracts, grants and funders;

§ Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, with experience partnering with program, finance and development teams to support funding, evaluation and organizational effectiveness;

§ Advanced comfort with data analysis and reporting, with the ability to translate technical information into clear insights for diverse audiences;

§ Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging and experience working effectively with diverse teams and communities;

§ Ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines and stakeholder needs in a complex organizational environment;

§ Interest and aptitude for building, refining and documenting systems, workflows and best practices from the ground up;

§ Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills; bilingual Spanish preferred;

§ Proficiency with MS Office, internal databases, HMIS systems, Census Analysis, Housing Vacancy Survey and NYC OpenData
