Data Analyst, Operations job description

Are you a Sherlock Holmes of data, finding the gaps or breaks in data that others miss? Can you use your SQL skills to uncover mysteries in reporting? Does order and process make your heart sing? When others see a roadblock, does the angel on your shoulder tell you there is a way? Do you love animals? Then this is the role for you!

We are looking for our first Data Analyst and Operations Specialist to lead the data investigations in our data issues and work across a variety of teams to resolve them. This candidate will be someone who loves to follow a question mark through to resolution, collaborating with many different teams along the way.

This is a new function, and you will be at ground level to develop our data and reporting work. This is a great opportunity for someone early in their data and analytics career to get mentorship and hands on experience to created validated and trusted reporting by ensuring the incoming data is accurate, synchronized, validated against the originating platform, and correctly ingesting into our reports. You will also be supporting broader data analytics and engineering projects, gaining exposure and mentorship to grow your analytical skill set. This individual will partner closely with stakeholders across the organization and through external vendors to develop our data environment that powers and creates a sole source of truth for all departments.

Your duties would include making sure all our practices are set up and syncing correctly, investigating open data issues, maintaining all mapping across all practice data pipelines, and maintaining our data dictionary.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with a no-job-too-big or small attitude. They will have a mix of inquisitiveness, learning agility, emotional intelligence, and drive for success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mapping updates for Operations, Talent Acquisition, Marketing, etc
  • Outlining data flows, i.e., which parts of the organization generate data, which require data to function, how data flows are managed, and how data changes in transition
  • Overseeing the integration of new technologies and initiatives into data standards and structures
  • Translating business requirements into technical specifications, including data streams, integrations, transformations, databases, and data warehouses
  • Evaluating the design, selection, and implementation of new databases or database changes and recommending optimal data solutions for the organization
  • Creating systems to keep data secure and ensuring data and information security by integrating and upholding digital security systems
  • Publishing and/or presenting reports, timeline updates, or recommendations
  • Identifying areas for improvement in current systems
  • Coordinating with other team members to reach project milestones and deadlines
  • Auditing databases regularly to maintain quality
  • Educate staff members through training and individual support

Qualifications

Desired experience

  • A degree in computer science, statistics, or a background in data analysis and/or engineering
  • Knowledge of SQL to extract and manipulate data, preferred experience with Python
  • Familiarity with database technologies: AWS Redshift, Snowflake, SQL Server, ETL (AWS), Amazon S3, etc.
  • Data Visualization and Reporting experience: Tableau
  • Preferred prior experience in a startup environment or client-facing/consulting experience

This role must be familiar with database design and systems, database technology, and logical data analysis. To succeed, you will also need additional skills and qualifications, including:

  • Excellent communication skills to translate complex problems using non-technical terms
  • In-depth understanding of modern database and information technologies
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to work towards meeting multiple deadlines simultaneously
  • Hands-on aptitude with a willingness to troubleshoot and solve complex problems
  • Intellectual curiosity to discover new approaches and insights
  • Ability to collaborate cross functionality and function effectively as an individual leader
  • Strong attention to detail
