Job Description & Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
Lead the design and delivery of executive dashboards, operational reports, analytical visualizations, and interactive decision-support products using Power BI/Power Platform, Tableau, or comparable enterprise visualization tools.
Translate business and mission questions into clear visual narratives, KPI frameworks, measures, drill paths, filters, alerts, and reporting experiences that support specific decisions and actions.
Design and optimize semantic models, data relationships, calculations, measures, transformations, and reusable analytical layers using Power BI/DAX/Power Query, Tableau calculations/LOD expressions, or comparable methods.
Apply advanced data-visualization principles, information hierarchy, visual perception, data storytelling, and dashboard design practices to make complex information understandable without oversimplifying it.
Validate source data, metric definitions, calculation logic, filters, denominators, refresh behavior, performance, permissions, and visual outputs to ensure dashboards are accurate, defensible, and traceable.
Conduct stakeholder working sessions and lightweight usability testing; apply Section 508/WCAG and inclusive-design practices to interactions, color use, keyboard behavior, labels, and alternative representations.
Manage publishing, row-level security, refresh schedules, workspace/site organization, permissions, deployment practices, and production support for visualization products.
Integrate visualization products with approved Power Platform capabilities such as Power Apps, Power Automate, SharePoint, Dataverse, or Microsoft Fabric when workflow or user interaction requires more than a dashboard alone.
Establish reusable dashboard templates, visualization standards, measure definitions, design patterns, documentation, and governance practices that improve consistency across workstreams.
Partner with data analysts, data engineers, AI/data science resources, clinical/domain SMEs, and program teams to ensure authoritative sources, accurate interpretation, effective user enablement, and continuous improvement based on usage and feedback. Support visualization of AI-related measures such as solution adoption, evaluation results, quality, performance, user feedback, human oversight, and operational impact where applicable.
For Senior-level assignments, provide peer review and mentoring, advise leaders on visualization strategy, and challenge reporting approaches that create misleading, redundant, or low-value information products.
Requirements
Required:
Bachelor's degree in data analytics, business intelligence, information systems, statistics, computer science, design, engineering, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered.
7+ years of experience in data visualization, business intelligence, analytics, dashboarding, or decision-support delivery. Senior placement will generally require 10+ years plus demonstrated leadership of complex visualization portfolios or standards.
Advanced hands-on expertise with Power BI/Power Platform or Tableau is required, including experience designing complex, production-grade dashboards and visual analytics for executive and operational audiences.
Strong data-visualization and data-storytelling skills, including visual hierarchy, chart selection, information density, interaction design, accessibility/Section 508, and clear communication of trends, comparisons, exceptions, uncertainty, and performance.
Strong data-modeling and analytical skills, including experience with SQL and with Power BI semantic models/DAX/Power Query, Tableau data models/calculations, or comparable enterprise BI methods.
Demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous stakeholder needs into KPI definitions, reporting requirements, dashboard concepts, prototypes, and production-ready decision-support products.
Experience validating source data and calculations and managing dashboard performance, publishing, access control, versioning, documentation, support, and enterprise lifecycle practices.
Recommended certification: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300), Microsoft Power Platform Solution Architect/related Power Platform credential, Tableau Certified Data Analyst, or comparable BI/data-visualization certification.
Ability to satisfy VA personnel vetting and applicable security, privacy, accessibility, records-management, and data-handling requirements.
Desired:
Prior VA, VHA, federal health, or other federal analytics/visualization experience, particularly supporting executive reporting, operational performance, modernization, or adoption measurement.
Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Dataverse, SharePoint, Power Apps, Power Automate, Azure services, Tableau Server/Cloud, SQL Server, Databricks, Snowflake, or comparable enterprise data platforms.
Experience developing enterprise visualization standards, dashboard design systems, reusable templates, semantic-model standards, Centers of Excellence, or governed self-service analytics practices.
Prior experience supporting AI/ML, generative AI, intelligent automation, or other AI-enabled programs/projects is strongly preferred, including experience translating AI evaluation, adoption, quality, performance, or operational-impact measures into clear visual analytics and decision-support products.
Experience mentoring analysts/designers, conducting peer reviews, and advising senior stakeholders on metric selection, visual communication, and dashboard strategy is strongly preferred.
A portfolio or work samples demonstrating sophisticated dashboards, visual analytics, data storytelling, or complex decision-support products is highly desirable.
